Tortured Terminology

10:45–11:45 a.m.

Presenter:
Barbara Miller, Foundation and Corporate Gifts Manager, DESC (Downtown Emergency Service Center)

Description:
Tortured Terminology is a lively, interactive presentation about jargon and other language atrocities too often used without careful thought by grantmakers and grantseekers alike. While there can be advantages to using field-specific or (supposedly) commonly-understood language, they are largely outweighed by its disadvantages. Through fun exercises (complete with prizes!) and contemporary examples, this presentation challenges attendees to take note of jargon they and others use and avoid it to make writing clearer and more precise.
