A Statement of Solidarity and Action
Puget Sound Grantwriters Association stands in solidarity with our Asian and Asian American colleagues, friends, family, and neighbors. The racist and misogynist murders of Daoyou Feng, Hyun J. Grant, Suncha Kim, Paul Andre Michels, Soon C. Park, Xiojie Tan, Delaina Ashley Yaun, and Yong Yue on March 16th are horrific examples of the anti-Asian violence that exists in our nation. These hate crimes ripple through our society, undermine safety, and reopen the pain of past harassment and discrimination. It is a manifestation of white supremacy, xenophobia, and structural racism that have, for too long, persisted in our country.
Puget Sound Grantwriters Association denounces white supremacy and acts of terrorism that continue to fuel discrimination and violence against Asians, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders and other People of Color in the United States. We would like to share a few resources:
- BIPOC staff can email brianna@communities-rise.org to receive notifications for future free BIPOC wellness workshops co-hosted by Communities Rise and RVC.
- Learn more about bystander intervention from Hollaback! and sign up to receive information about future workshops on bystander intervention to stop anti-Asian American and xenophobic harassment.
- Find resources at Seattle University’s Toolkit for Anti-Asian Racism.
- Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS),
- Anti-Asian Violence Resources
- Washington State Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs resources for reporting hate incidents.
- Asian Americans and Seattle’s Civil Rights History.
- Additional resources from Launch.
The PSGA Board stands in solidarity with our region’s Black community and the fight to end systemic racism and racially motivated violence. The long list of people killed out of hate and brutality now includes Manuel Ellis, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Oscar Grant, Eric Garner, and Trayvon Martin. We say their names because their lives matter, and we must stand in solidarity to put a stop to police brutality and white supremacy.
PSGA’s Board recognizes that our organization has significant work ahead. We acknowledge that we are often missing voices from black, indigenous, and communities of color in our panels, our Board, our committees, and our membership. We know that we cannot be silent about this, and that we must commit to applying an anti-racist lens to our work.
We also recognize that words must be accompanied by tangible actions. In June we committed to revising our annual Grants Competition so that it will center on the racial justice work proposed by organizations. We look forward to updating you with more actions in the future.
