Job Summary
Community Roots Housing is looking for a Senior Manager of Philanthropy who will manage the implementation of a strategic approach to fundraising, splitting their time between individual and institutional giving. They will support the Foundation in its long-term goal to transform our fundraising model from charity to justice, centering racial equity and our residents in all that we do. The Senior Manager of Philanthropy is a full-time employee of Community Roots Housing.
Individual giving: The Senior Manager of Philanthropy will manage the organization’s overall individual giving priorities and strategy, both for the annual fund and for the Rise Together capital campaign. This position collaborates with fundraising staff and partner organizations to manage individual giving prospecting, solicitation, stewardship, and acknowledgement. This position will be tasked with developing and implementing a major gifts program for Community Roots. Along with the Grants and Philanthropy Manager, the Senior Manager of Philanthropy will staff the Foundation Board Individual Giving Committee.
Institutional giving: With support from the Grants and Philanthropy Manager, the Senior Manager of Philanthropy will be responsible for overseeing the development of a strategy for annual grants acquisition and stewardship, and will support grant strategy and applications for the Rise Together capital campaign as needed. This position works directly with Community Roots program staff to develop strategies for funding programs and related projects. This position is also expected to lead preparation of grant and award applications as well as reports as needed.
Job Duties
- Manage staff with empathy, support and concern, focusing on developing employees based on their individual strengths and desired areas of growth.
- Manage individual giving prospecting and represent the organization through direct solicitation of their own portfolio of individual donors.
- Oversee acknowledgement and stewardship of individual donors.
- Create and project manage tailored portfolios of individual donors to be held by senior staff and board members.
- Work closely with the Individual Giving and Events & Sponsorship board committees on individual fundraising goals and strategy.
- Lead individual giving campaigns, such as Giving Tuesday and End of Year giving.
- Working closely with the Grants Manager and with support from the Foundation Executive Director, develop the annual grants and award application strategy in alignment with organizational objectives around racial equity, justice, and community-centric fundraising.
- Working with the appropriate staff, including program staff and capital campaign partners, prepare and submit grant applications for restricted and unrestricted funding sources as well as award applications as needed.
- Oversee prospect research on foundations, corporations and government sources through the Foundation Directory Online database and other resources to identify new grant opportunities throughout the year, including capital grant opportunities.
- Review and approve all grant and award submissions, funder acknowledgements, and reports, ensuring input and approval by the appropriate parties.
- Oversee the meticulous recording and tracking of grant and individual giving opportunities in Salesforce (CRM) through all stages, with detailed deliverables for each opportunity.
- Project manage annual budgeting, actuals and financial reporting around institutional and individual giving.
- Attend and prepare for quarterly Foundation Board Meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Demonstrated commitment to racial and economic justice, as well as awareness of the impacts of institutional racism on housing and economic opportunity.
- Minimum four years of experience in one or more of the following areas: fund development, individual gifts management, grants management
- Minimum one year of staff management experience and/or demonstrated ability to nurture others’ growth and leadership.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships with prospective and current donors.
- Successful experience soliciting five- and six-figure gifts from individual donors.
- Demonstrated track record of crafting winning public and private funding proposals for nonprofits.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, including public speaking and one-on-one meetings.
- The ability to operate efficiently and gracefully under pressure of deadlines.
- Project management skills; highly organized; efficient with time.
- Demonstrated skill in goal setting, planning, coordinating, and organizing/motivating groups of people toward goals.
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
- Proficiency in general office software, such as MS Office Suite and Microsoft Teams.
- Prior experience with CRM database use and management.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in and with communities of color, which are disproportionately represented among our low-income housing residents due to the impacts of systemic and institutional racism.
- Experience with major gifts management and a portfolio of existing donor/funder relationships to bring to Community Roots Housing.
- Bachelor’s degree OR demonstrated equivalent work experience
- Experience in the affordable housing industry.
- Knowledge of local, state and national funding sources.
- Proficiency in Salesforce (CRM).
Salary Range
$75,000 – $90,000
Supervisory Responsibility:
This position supervises the Grants and Philanthropy Manager and has a dotted line supervisory relation to the Communications Specialist where grants and philanthropy work is concerned.
