Job Description
The National Nordic Museum is seeking a talented Grant Writer to join its Development team. Designated a national Museum by Act of Congress in 2019, the National Nordic Museum has a national and global reach with virtual programs reaching viewers in all 50 states and 64 nations. The Museum’s compelling exhibitions and programs receive regional, national and international funding. The Museum reaches a diverse audience from throughout the Puget Sound Region and greater Pacific Northwest.
The Grant Writer is responsible for all aspects of the Museum’s grant seeking efforts, including identifying and researching prospective funders, developing funding strategies and stewarding foundation relationships. The Grant Writer will craft compelling narrative, engage team members as appropriate in preparing grant requests and reports, oversee the submission process for applications, and comply with all reporting requirements.
Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Develop an annual grant-seeking plan that identifies funders, submission deadlines, key funding guidelines, alignment with Museum programs and/or projects, anticipated award amounts, and any conditions—such as required matching funds, etc.
- Identify funders that are well aligned with the Museum’s vision, mission, values, exhibitions, and programs. Conduct donor, agency, and foundation research using external and internal sources; maintain grantor and prospect profiles.
- In collaboration with the Development Manager, Director of Development, and senior staff, develop strategies for specific funders that will lead to competitive and successful submissions.
- Prepare grant requests that are aligned with funders’ guidelines and priorities and that position the Museum and its programs as a leading national and international institution.
- Work closely with Museum staff to ensure that funding opportunities are identified and pursued, submission and report deadlines are met, budget and support materials are accurate, and reports/evaluations are completed as required by funders.
- Oversee reporting for grants received, collaborate with program staff to ensure timelines and deliverables are met, and produce status and final reports as required.
- In collaboration with senior staff, maintain the institution’s comprehensive narrative. Ensure messaging (and all materials submitted) is accurate, current, relevant, and compelling.
- Update CRM records on a consistent basis, including, but not limited to, submission and award detail, address changes, relationships, document uploading, etc.
- Process awards, donations, commitments/pledges, funds received, prepare acknowledgements, and maintain accurate records.
- Code and deposit incoming gifts and grant income or awards.
- Develop and maintain relationships with funders and prospective funders.
- Organize and maintain all hardcopy and electronic grant archives, including applications, supporting materials, budgets, reports and contracts.
- On a monthly basis, perform reconciliations with Finance Department.
- Prepare briefing documents, monthly reports on grant activity, agendas, meeting minutes, reports, and other materials as necessary.
- Develop the grant portion of the Museum’s annual budget; track grant revenues and progress towards achieving goals.
- As a member of the Development team, represent the Museum at community events and meetings; build and maintain strong relationships with staff, trustees, donors, prospects, volunteers, and others.
- Support other development initiatives and special events as assigned.

- Excellent verbal, writing and editing skills: English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary.
- Adaptable to changing business situations and environments.
Requirements
- BA or equivalent and 5+ years grant writing in non-profit development.
- Occasional weekend and evening work.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Outlook, Excel, Publisher, Access, and PowerPoint. Experience using fund development software—Salesforce or comparable.
- Proficient in PC platform
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to lift 20lbs
- Ability to be seated/standing for extended periods
Salary Range
Compensation for the position will be $48,000-$61,000 DOE.
